Electronvolt

The electronvolt (eV) is a unit of energy, usually used to express small energies. 1 eV is equal to the kinetic energy of an electron accelerated across a potential difference of 1 V or 1.6 x 10-19J.

You can convert between joules and electron volts quite easily:

  • Joules to electron volts - divide by 1.6 x 10-19
  • Electron volts to joules - multiply by 1.6 x 10-19
